Building homes and townhouses in Baltimore, Maryland for 30 years, The Mark Building Company has learned a few things about good construction practices. In fact, they continue to learn and change with the evolving environment. While they pioneered the use of loose-laid house wraps in the Baltimore area 30 years ago, they have found that the use of house wraps on the single family homes and townhouses they build today wasn’t going to meet the challenges of improving energy- effciency to meet energy code mandates, while decreasing overall construction costs.

The Mark Building Company (www.markbuilding.com) builds townhouses on the waterfront. While the old adage of “Location. Location. Location.” is appropriate for real estate sales, on the construction side of the fence, waterfront construction locations bring unique hurdles. For instance, The Mark Building Company faced the problem of loose-laid house wraps coming loose and fl ying away in the wind. In addition, high humidity levels forced the builder to use intensive interior air sealing packages, since the wrap didn’t stop the moisture-laden air from reaching the interior wall cavities, resulting in the need to over-size HVAC systems to adequately condition the interior space…
